Secrets of the Masai
I’m so excited to announce the release of my new online e-course: the Essentials Whole Health Program! It’s especially designed for busy bodies who don’t have adequate time or resources to pursue private consultations. You will get a complete, easy-to-follow nutrition and wellness program that can be done on the go or in the comfort of your own home!
One of the myths discussed in my program is this idea of “the perfect diet” to prevent disease, feel great, and live long lives. The thing is, it’s not all about food, and it’s certainly not about calories or fat grams as described in many fad diets.
A couple of years ago my husband and I (see picture above) traveled to Africa. We took the opportunity to visit one of the Masai villages and learn about their unique culture and lifestyle.
What I found particularly interesting was the virtual non-existence of conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes which plague western society. And get this: their diet consists mainly of meat, milk, and blood (all animal products!). Those who are able to withstand the harsh living conditions and common infections can live well over 100 years with few disabilities. So what is their secret??
After years of study and nutritional practice, I have found that diet quality is an important key to great health. It is not the only key, however, which I will touch on a bit today.
The Masai Secrets:
Less Chronic Stress:
These people generally lead less complicated, slower-paced lives than those of our culture. Chronic stress driven by hectic careers and insatiable appetites for productivity contribute to a multitude of health issues ranging from digestive problems to back pain.
Food Quality:
The animal foods consumed are from grass-fed, pastured animals that receive adequate exercise and sunlight, producing higher quality meat and milk. The milk is raw (not pasteurized) and often fermented (probiotic). I will be talking a lot about food quality in my upcoming program!
Outdoor Activity:
The Masai spend much of their time outdoors. Research shows that Vitamin D from the sun affects bone health, immune function, and helps prevent various cancers and autoimmune disorders.
Physical Lifestyle:
Frequent and regular physical activity boosts the immune system, improves mental health, and helps to prevent “diseases of affluence” such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
Lower Toxic Load:
Natural medicines, chemical-free foods, and clean air reduce their overall toxic load and most definitely contribute to an overall healthy body.
